No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Therefore take heed how you hear.

Luke 8:16-18a NKJV

"Take heed how you hear," Jesus says. If you hear a painful secret as something to obscure and distort for your own purposes, your secret, too, will be revealed.

Long Memory

"And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book." (Revelation 22:18-19 NLT)

Truth and Justice

"[T]his is what you must do: Tell the truth to each other. Render verdicts in your courts that are just and that lead to peace. Don’t scheme against each other. Stop your love of telling lies that you swear are the truth. I hate all these things, says the LORD.” (Zechariah 8:16-17 NLT)

Waiting For the Harvest

Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. (2 Corinthians 5:11-12 ESV)

You can read all the Jesus blogs you want, timidly suggesting to your friends, colleagues, followers, and fans that this Jesus might really be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The minute they learn that you still have problems, they’ll put themselves forward as, well, the way, the truth, and the life, lower case.

You can’t advance your career or your studies? The sky’s the limit for them. You have family problems? Every minute they spend with their kin is heaven on earth, every minute away is filled with yearning. You long for intimacy? They have it how and when they want with whom they want in ways you’ve never even thought of.

All you have to do, they imply, is give up this bigoted, hateful, primitive, repressive “religion”, live as they do, and your life will be perfect, just like theirs.

Paul says your Savior sees the half truths they stitch together to cover themselves as well as He sees your heart. Which do you think He’ll boast about the next time Satan comes to accuse you?

Coming Clean

For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. ( 2 Corinthians 5:13-15 ESV)

"He died for us. Let’s live for Him." You’ve heard this one before, but have you used it on those people who are so invested in turning you against Jesus? Have you asked yourself why they put so much energy into convincing you to hate Jesus? Are they worried about your future or their own? How will they have to change if they don’t win you away from Jesus? What will they have to confess? What will they have to do to come clean?

Are All Religions Alike?

Alternatively, is Jesus the same in all religions? To be sure, Jesus is written about in the bedrock texts of other religions, but does that Jesus square with the Jesus in His own holy book, the Bible? If not, that other version is a shameless fraud. Anyone who believes in a counterfeit Jesus is being cheated, and that fact should rouse our neighborly compassion for them. Be like Paul: know the difference and share the real Jesus.

"And what I do I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds." (2 Corinthians 11:12-15 ESV)
