How To Truly Help the Homeless
I just had to reblog this. In very few words, dreamilysailing cuts through the rhetoric and gives us practical ways to help. This is exactly what Jesus is talking about in Matthew 25:31-46. Thank you, dreamilysailing.
I have been volunteering at my local soup kitchen for over a year now and I just feel like there is something that needs to be said about the homeless. THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS! They are capable of making a conversation and sometimes they just want people to treat them like they are people too.
Here are some ways that you can help:
Personally I don’t think it is right to give them money because there is a good chance they will spend it on drugs and alcohol, which is not going to help their situation at all! But there is so much more you can do! You can offer to buy them a meal or you can try volunteering at a soup kitchen! It is an incredible experience! The other volunteers are great, and you get to meet new people all the time (I actually met one of my best friends while volunteering and she has changed my life…not even kidding <3) and it gives you the opportunity to interact with homeless people in an environment where they are comfortable. I would HIGHLY recommend it :) Also just try giving them a smile when you walk past them on the street. Remind them that some people do care! I know homeless men and women are accused of being just plain lazy and that they should never be encouraged in any way. Some are very lazy, yes, but that DOESN’T mean they still don’t need a friend to help them get back on their feet! And finally and most importantly what you can do is pray for them!
